The New York Giants had to make a very tough cut before the start of the 2022 regular season.

But his release of a veteran linebacker would certainly raise a few eyebrows.

The Giants have released linebacker Blake Martinez ahead of the final year of his contract, according to ESPN NFL insider Field Yates.

Martinez was going into the third year of the three-year, $30 million deal he signed in 2020.

and was one of their best players during his 6-10 campaign.

But the following year he tore his ACL and missed almost all of 2021.

The Giants this past spring restructured their contract to reduce the heavy cap hit to keep them on the roster.

However, it was not enough for him to make it to the roster.

As a member of the Stanford Cardinals in 2015, Blake Martinez earned first-team All-Pac-12 honors.

He was highly rated by scouts when he went to the Green Bay Packers in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft.

In his four seasons with the Packers, Martinez proved to be a tireless tackler who also became a fan favorite.

He led the league in tackles in 2017 and finished his time at Green Bay with 512 tackles, 10.0 sacks, 29 tackles for losses and 12 QB hits.

It is believed that Martinez was healthy enough to play this season so the move must have been for cap reasons.
