The San Francisco 49ers need more quarterback depth, and they filled it Tuesday afternoon.

San Francisco is adding former Falcons & Packers quarterback Kurt Benkert to its practice squad,

According to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network.

Benkert will now become the third QB with the 49ers after Jimmy Garoppolo and rookie Brock Purdy.

Garoppolo has moved from backup to the starting role after a season-ending injury loss to Trey Lance.

Benkert signed with the Atlanta Falcons in 2018 as a free agent based out of Virginia.

He alternated between the team's practice squad and active roster for the next three seasons,

But did not appear in a regular season game.

Benkert moved to Green Bay, starting with the practice squad in 2021

And eventually earned a promotion when Jordan Love was placed on the COVID-19 list.

He saw his first action last December 12 against the Chicago Bears, kneeling twice in the final seconds of a victory.
