A beloved sports writer tragically passed away this week at the age of 61.
Gwen Knapp, Who was it “Renowned in the San Francisco area for focusing on topics such as racism, sexism and drugs in columns that sometimes angered sports stars,” he died after a battle with cancer.
The former New York Times editor, who previously worked as a columnist in San Francisco and Philadelphia, had lymphoma.

“I want to tell you about my friend Gwen. But I will do so through tears. For now know that she was my lifesaver, who always answered the phone at 2 a.m. so that I had time to laugh or cry Met. If I could just call her. Godspeed, Gweny. I love you,” wrote an aide.
One reporter said, “Gwen Knapp was a wonderful voice of reason in an era where many columnists were anything but.”
“Gwen Knapp, one of our editors at sports, passed away today after enduring so much. She was a great journalist. She was a fierce advocate for doing good and interesting work. She was a supportive colleague. (Thank you. ) She cared so much. I will miss her dearly. May she rest in peace,” said an aide.
