The Detroit Lions just barely missed the playoffs this year, winning eight of their last 10 games after finishing 9-8 and starting the season 1-6. And a coach can be in a position to capitalize on a team’s success in a big way.
The Arizona Cardinals have requested Aaron Glenn, the defensive coordinator with the Lions, to interview for their head coaching vacancy, according to NFL insider Tom Pellissero. Glenn has been considered a top coaching candidate for several years now and specializes in coaching defensive backs.
But the 2022 season was not exactly the best season for Glenn. Their defense was ranked worst in the NFL in the first half of the season with the most yards allowed and 28th points allowed. There were rumors throughout the season that Glenn may have been responsible for the team’s poor performance.
For Cardinals fans, Glenn’s candidacy is a non-starter. Many are saying that Glenn’s interview is a sign that the team is not serious about being a true contender.
Coaching trends definitely seem to be leaning towards the offensive side of the ball these days. Seven of the eight post-season head coaches currently specialize in offense.
Every team has its exceptions, of course, and perhaps the Cardinals will see qualities in Glenn that go beyond the side of the ball he’s most experienced with.
